Comic Club: D12Y2.1 The School of Death

I agree that it is very odd, I still think that’s probably how it’s meant, but very weirdly formulated

School of Death was amazing. Great art and a great story. They captured Clara and 12 great and it was just fun. I also liked that it was the perfect length.

The bath scene with Clara and 12 was really fun!

The two other stories were kind of meh.

Year Two of Twelve’s run seems off to a promising start, since I really enjoyed this one. The art style has improved and I am happy about that.

The School of Death was quite good. The antics of it all were just a lot of fun, I feel it especially nailed Twelve and Clara’s dynamic. And the way Clara has picked up certain Doctor-isms and behaves like him in his absence, just spot on characterization. The return of the Sea Devils was a welcome surprise (though I can’t say I’m a fan of their design here) and the brief appearance of Kate and Osgood didn’t go unappreciated. Also, Sonny the stuffed swordfish was a top tier one-off “companion”. Overall just well-written and pleasantly comedic.

The Fourth Wall was also loads of fun. Its gimmick doesn’t become overused and all the countless references were fun to spot. It was neat to see The Boneless make a return and I feel they went well-used here.

Robot Rampage was fine, a pretty standard Free Comic Book Day story. But as always, it’s nice to see Osgood again

The School of Death: A very enjoyable, fun Story focusing on Clara. I was a bit caught off guard by Christel Dee’s Likeness being used here, that felt a bit out of left field. The new Sea Devil Designs is kinda horrendous, I get why they changed it up, but it looks so much more generic. Still, the Story has enough of good to offer, be it its Artstyle (which is quite visually pleasing) or the Focus on Clara. I think this Range has found its footing, and I am all for it!

The Fourth Wall: A nice way to experiment with its Medium. It’s a bit too overcomplicated at times, I’d argue, but I enjoyed it regardless. And I am very glad it was a shorter one, if it was longer, I think the Gimmick (let’s be honest it’s a very gimmicky Story) would wear off very quickly. (I probably sound a bit more negative than intended, I enjoyed it a lot, don’t get me wrong, but it does miss a something, which I am not sure how to properly articulate it).

Robo Rampage: A fine enough FCBD Comic with a nicely drawn K2 Robot. A bit too simple for my liking, but hey, a solid Read for a FCBD one!

I’m only about four months behind on Comic Club but I think that’s partly because the last run of 11 strips really disheartened me because I really didn’t enjoy them so that put me off picking up another Titan for a while.

But fortunarely, The School of Death is a great, classic adventure story. The characterisations of 12 and Clara are spot on and if Capaldi had been like this more often on screen I think I’d warm to him more. As people have said upthread, he’s definitely in his Series 9 version here with the arseholeness of Series 8 being slowly chipped away at which is all for the good. Everything with Sonny is great.

I love a classic monster coming back and the return of the Sea Devils doesn’t disappoint. I’m in two minds about their redesign. I like the head and upper torso but think the tail adds nothing and would have been better removed. I like that there is a beautiful montage illustration of the original story when the Doctor is flashbacking for Clara as it allows the reader to see how the design has been extrapolated and updated.

Lots of really cool action sequences and I love the school being slowly taken over which has echoes of films ike The Faculty. And yes, it is a bit weird to see Christel Dee in the cold open getting offed by some Sea Devils.

A really enjoyable 8/10 (and the gag about the moustache on Kate’s picture is brilliant).

Enjoyed both Robo Rampage (got to love a gigantic Giant Robot!) and The Fourth Wall (love a returning monster and the Boneless being in a comic is a great idea).

Neither is particularly deep but they are fun one off adventures and, as with School of Death, a breath of fresh air after the torturous surrealism and depressed 11 of the previous couple of clubs.

Clara Oswald and the School of Death: okay little story but nothing special. Marvel references felt kinda weird to me. Also - a new addition to evil Prime Ministers of the Whoniverse cannon!

The Fourth Wall: again, fun but nothing special. So the Marvel is referenced again huh…

Robo Rampage: fun little story. Love a call-back to the Fourth Doctor
