Mentioned recently, but I was not a great fan of this book. The plot moved quickly and it wasn’t necessarily boring—Benny being stranded in Earth’s past is an interesting idea for a story. But I never found the writing very compelling and I didn’t like the way the author wrote women very much. A low 5/10 sadly!

And now we’re on the VNAs I’ve actually reviewed.

Birthright is an ambitious novel written by a totally unambitious writer. It’s fun and inoffensive but also pretty generic. However, this is where I truly began to love this TARDIS team.

I’m about a third into the novel. Really enjoying it so far. The prose flows well and it has hooked me better than most earlier books. This is also interesting because I’ve listened to the BF version of this story before reading the book, with Benny and Jason Kane instead of Ace and the Doctor. So it’s interesting to see how this original book differs from the adaptation, even though I expect the main plot beats to be the same.

I can already hear Mikhail Popov speak in Colin Baker’s Russian accent in my head.

I think, I mentioned it not long ago but reading this one was a tough one. And so far from the few VNAs that I read it was certainly the second weakest (but granted I haven’t read all that much from them).
While Birthright has some great Ideas to it, I mean the Plot is quite genius to really show us this TARDIS Team, even if this Story is very much more cut out as a Doctor-Lite story than anything else. I do think there are some nice Moments to be found, while I am not the biggest Fan of the actual Prose, they do move together quite nicely for the most Part. Although I am also not quite sold on how the Author writes certain Characters at times. That said, there is just something about this one, that just didn’t quite click with me.

I do overall prefer the Benny Adaption over the original Novel, even if that one is also more on the weaker Side of her first Series. Funnily enough, I haven’t noticed it, but I have been reading the Author’s Entry in the Timewyrm Saga and I must admit.. So far I quite like this one a lot more, but then again I am still quite a few Pages away from actually finishing that one.
If anything

It’s been about a thousand years since I read this but my overriding memory is of enjoying it immensely (and definitely more than I enjoyed its bedfellow, Iceberg. I particularly liked Benny’s Victorian London bits.

I like this one quite a bit, as said above the Benny Victorian scenes are great and it’s really the first book that shows she’s a strong enough character for a spinoff. While he’s not in it much I also like how you see 7s machinations all through, I don’t like the Ace sections much but the Merlin doctor is a interesting character

Oh yes. I’d forgotten Muldwych was in this. It’s a shame more wasn’t done with him and he’s been more or less forgotten in the EU.

I miss their reviews so much  This series was how I interacted with the VNAs

Yeah, one highlight with the VNAs is that I get to watch the corresponding Poparena video after I’ve finished each book. It’s a pity he hasn’t done them all, though.
