PODCAST NOTES:

  • Not exactly news, but Nick reiterates that new releases being download only is due to manufacturing costs and a decline in CD sales. Nick said there’s also a slight environmental concern to CDs too, but really it’s the costs.
  • Benji saw an article this week that vinyl is on its way out and that the younger generation is starting to be interested in CDs again. Nick said if CDs at Big Finish became popular again they’d make more, but they just don’t have the sales right now to justify it.
  • There are plans for Alex Macqueen’s Master to return soon (some ā€œrather thrilling plansā€ — Nick is trying to keep it vague).

What Big Finish I Was Listening to This Week: Finished The Story Demon and listened to all of The War Doctor: Fallen Heroes and Hooklight 2. All three were absolutely amazing, especially Fallen Heroes and Hooklight 2. I can’t believe Big Finish released two of their best sets in recent memory in the same week.

Random Tangents: Nick talks about an experience of going on holiday where the airline he flew down with to Bermuda went bankrupt while he was there, so their return flight suddenly didn’t exist.

I’m glad they’ve reiterated it again, because it does irk me to constantly see people berate them for it when they’re a small company that cannot justify such expenses if the demand isn’t there.

OH!!! This is very exciting.

Vinyl is already on its way out after the resurgence a few years ago? Wow.

I’m shocked too, I’ve loved getting vinyl over the last few years and still do when an album drops for one of my faves, or an album I like.

Yeah, the only physical releases I’ve bought are vinyl (9th Doctor, Dalek Universe & I’ve picked up some of the limited ones through 3rd party sellers).

The biggest problem with Vinyl is that it’s become so damn expensive. It got popular and the price skyrocketed.

Also, large artists/labels are hogging pressing plants, so smaller labels don’t have a chance to get vinyl pressed.

Understandable. Admittedly I’m a part of the statistic as I’ve long since stopped buying vinyl (but the bands I like are old school so I was only buying used). I do recall how expensive the new albums were though when I’d sift through the record stores.

I’ve seen some people buy a record or two without even having a player; they wanted a physical copy of an album they liked just to say they had it or because they admired the cover art. These days it’s difficult to justify spending the money on something that will sit on a shelf collecting dust.

That’s technically me! I bought my copy of Julien Baker’s Little Oblivions thinking our old record player still worked; sadly, it doesn’t. I still have the record, of course — I even have it on my wall! But have never played it

Although from a general trend point of view vinyl may be on its way out, I only got a turntable and starting buying records a year ago, and I still think it’s neat (I love physical media). That being said, I have no desire to buy Big Finish audios on vinyl, because I tend to listen to those when traveling.

Yeah I’ve never found the appeal for BF vinyls myself either as I prefer listening with headphones! But I can see the want to collect them, they’re lovely to collect and they even did exclusive artworks for some I believe.

I’ve only just realised that the actor plays one of the dads in the inbetweeners (which i loved growing up)

If I got a BF vinyl, it’d have to be Torchwood, and I’d probably just hang it somewhere or something cuz I never plan on owning a vinyl player

Me with my big circles of spinning plastic:

I don’t get the appeal of listening to audiobooks/dramas on vinyl at all - I’d go for cassette before vinyl - but clearly some people do, or they wouldn’t have sold so well!
