Big Finish: Once and Future

Why are you down on Time Lord Immemorial?
I thought it was very much on par with the other six Once and Future releases at the time.

Not counting Coda here. Coda was great

For me, Time Lord Immemorial was a let down because of the potential it had. Some wonderful cast, all split up and not much happening.

I just felt that there was more we could have done with 9 meeting the Unbound Doctor, or 9 meeting The Lumiat, and I feel like the characters were far too split up in favour of a plot that absolutely failed to stick with me.(Also, I’m prejudiced against any story featuring sand creatures. Sleep No More has made me despise the concept.)

This times 1,000! I was excited to have Chris Eccleston, David Warner and Gina McKee in one audio! And then it wasted all of them in such a dull and forgettable story.

This is basically how I felt about most, if not all, of the stories. There was a lot of potential in the overarching plot, but it ended up being weird audio fan-fic-y random team up stories.

This was the first (and currently only) I heard of the Ninth Doctor on audio - I might have been coasting on that a bit

i think once and future was a let-down but not because of the reason a lot of people say, the “dartboard”. tbh i’m kinda over this criticism atp. the arc itself had so much potential but they just kinda let it fizzle away and every episode had the same arc development until they finally paid it some notice at the end.

Yeah exactly, the dartboard is amusing but the way O&F seemed disjointed and uninspired was my main issue too

Oh, I definitely agree.

The dartboard is just something we like to make fun of because it feels as if that is the approach BF is using for a lot of their sets these days. Just have a bunch of random characters meet just because they can (and even if they can’t).

The main problem I had was that it had absolutely no proper development of its overarching plot in any of its releases until the last one, and it never felt like a proper celebration of the 60th anniversary. Compare it to other anniversary stories, such as Light at the End, and it’s hugely disappointing. I pre-ordered the entire thing back when it was first announced, and in retrospect, it feels like nothing but a cash-in to capitalise on the anniversary.

In a lot of the Behind the Scenes interviews the writers said they were given a list of characters to use and had to come up with a story that fit them all in. This strikes me as the wrong way to do it.

That’s the definition of a dartboard!

It sounds like they ran out of time in the planning phase or didn’t really know what to do, but decided that they had to do something, and so ended up with this.

My main thoughts on the OaF series can be described in one simple bipartite sentence: If I’d known so many of the stories would rely heavily on BF-original characters I’ve never encountered yet, then I would never have bought the set at all!

That’s also why my favourite episodes are the ones where that’s less of a thing, which puts The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50 as my default favourite because it’s the only one where all the characters have had TV appearances already. Coda: The Final Act comes second as the technically-returning characters are used in such a way that they could just as easily be new creations for the episode rather than having their contributions hinge on knowing specifics of their characters, and The Artist at the End of Time comes third because, while it should be second by what I said earlier, the story itself is slightly more dependent on knowing that Jenny has had previous adventures post-The Doctor’s Daughter.

My Coda has been dispatched finally!

Mine too! :confetti_ball:

Another to add to my shelves!

I haven’t even taken any of them out of the plastic wrapper, thinking it’s worth more that way, do you think that’s right? Or should I take them out to display them better?

Oh I never leave things in the packaging. I don’t see the point. Things are bought to be used. If you’re only worried about resale value, what’s the point.

I had a friend who used to buy two copies of DWM - one to read and one to keep pristine!

I agree with books but I just use the download on the app. I don’t even own a CD player, except in the car lol

We will return to this statement once Shauny swims in the money he makes by selling his CDs, so that he can spend even more on flashy new audios, leaving the rest of us to envy his 100% completion rate

That money would go on holidays not more CDs.

That’s true, actually. Which means less time spent building this site!

I also think you should unpack them, @shauny!

Well actually my thinking went a bit like this:

I quite like owning the CDs because they look nice on a shelf. But I’m never going to actually use them.

So I spend like £5 more on something instead of getting just the download, and I get a CD.

Then if I get bored of owning it, I can sell the CD on eBay and make more money back than the difference between a CD and download, so it’s actually a win-win!

So not sure if unpacking them would make them worth less or not.

I much prefer having a physical collection, so I wish I had more Big Finish on CD.
