Not sure if this should go in this topic or the new deliveries one haha, but I discovered the Big Finish ebay page today so I have a few older and out of print stuff on the way, coming straight from the source
So soon I’ll have Graceless series 1, Vienna series 2 and Singularity in my collection
Oh yes, its a gold mine
I love BF audios but there’s an awful lot of them - only got into them last year
Halfway through SJ’s range. Thinking of doing the 11 & Valerie ones as i’ve not seen the The Brain of Morbius yet
Sorry if this has been discussed previously (I’ve only been using this forum since mid-March), but when watching Joy to the World, I remember thinking that Big Finish is probably salivating at the thought of the audios that could be made about the Doctor’s year with Anita at the Sandringham (I think that’s what it was called), and Anita working at the Time Hotel post-Joy to the World. It might be difficult to get Ncuti Gatwa to record audios since he seems to be a pretty in-demand actor, but I fully anticipate some Time Hotel audios if/when Big Finish receives the license to use story elements from the RTD2 era.
If we do ever get Fifteen audios (and I think that is a very big if), I would love to have Anita as a full companion - it’s always exciting to slot new companions into the continuity of the show, and Anita is right there!
I’d love if it was in the style of an iyashikei anime, where everything is low-stakes and there are no bad guys to take on. It would just be a slice of life showing different days in the life of them in the hotel.
Yeah if we ever do get full cast Fifteenth Doctor audios at Big Finish it’ll either be YEARS from now or a recast.
Eventually they will probably get the licence to do audios for this era and I’m sure they’ve pre-emptively asked David if he fancies doing some Fourteenth Doctor ones if that ever happened. But Ncuti? Something tells me he’ll be very unlikely.
The reason I’ll never, ever say impossible though is because both Tom and Chris came to Big Finish eventually and I honestly thought neither ever would. They even got John Hurt. Plus, despite his star on the rise, Ncuti may even find a few days paid work when otherwise he may have been on a long break between projects quite appealing, we will never know.
But there’s no doubt in my mind that if they get the licence to Fifteenth Doctor audios, it’ll be a long time after that that Ncuti does them, if he ever does.
If I had to put money on it, no Ncuti at Big Finish. I just can’t see it myself.
But like I said, I could never see Chris doing it either, now he’ll have done over 40 by the time his run with Billie ends.
Short trips, chronicles, audio novels and the like I can definitely see. And yes, absolutely - the year with Anita will almost certainly form the basis of one or some.
Yeah I feel like Ncuti will be in the same boat as Matt where he just will always be too busy
Where do I start with Bernice and Brax?
I really want to discover these characters
Sadly I’ve only experienced Brax without Benny, in Gallifrey, so I could only advise on where to start with Benny (even then, I’ve not done many).
Agreed - I think the most likely RTD2 audios once his era finishes are a Fourteenth Doctor adventures series and a new UNIT series, as the principal cast have already done Big Finish (and to be fair, I think you could do a lot of really interesting stuff with these, especially if we can get some former companions at UNIT). However, I don’t see any of these happening for a while.
Fifteen on audio would be the dream though!
I should have phrased that better - I’m looking for stuff with them individually, the pairing isn’t what I’m asking for (unless the pairing is a recommended entry point).
Oh, I’m bad at explaining things.
For Benny there’s the more recent range The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield. You can start with Series 1, or the most recent one: The Eternity Club (this is where I started). There’s the older ones too but I’m unfamiliar with them, someone else will be able to answer better on those!
I haven’t read/listen to lots of Brax stories, but two I’ve really enjoyed were Theatre of War and The Empire of Glass. They’re both books, and Theatre of War has an audio adaptation. Theatre of War was Brax’s first appearance and Empire of Glass is a VMA with the First Doctor and a younger version of Brax.
Here’s a pretty long guide on tumblr that goes into detail on brax which may be helpful: a very long guide to getting into Benny for the Braxiatel-inclined – @setaregan on Tumblr
If you want Brax, there are generally two places to go: the Benny Series (in which he’s a primary character from series 2 to series 11 of the audios, and almost all the books), or Gallifrey (where he doesn’t appear as much, but is an primary characters in the stories the appears in; saying more would be spoilery!)
There are also his appearances at Virgin, as @ProfessorSummerfield mentioned!
For Benny, outside of BF there’s the VNAs if you want her origins as a companion and her own series of New Adventures (which also feature Brax).
At Big Finish, her original series (all 11 series of audios intertwined with books); and a series of boxsets (Epoch through to Missing Persons) which follow in in some respects from the original series). I recommend @ivqks159 ’s guide if you’re interested in that:
And then there are the New Adventures, which I also recommend as an entry point! Don’t get me wrong, I adore her original Big Finish series to bits but it can seem super intimidating at first (and there is a Lot to get through). The New Adventures boxsets are a lot more approachable.
I especially recommend the series with David Warner’s Unbound Doctor: that’s Volume 3: The Unbound Universe onwards.
Just realised I’ve written a wall of text Benny and Brax are both very dear characters to me so I’m always happy to see more people interested in them!
I do love Big Finish, but I am feeling more and more frustrated by how many of the physical releases are limited to 1,000-1,500 copies. Especially as they don’t announce them to be limited runs until late in their production cycle.
Dark Gallifrey: Missy Part 2 isn’t listed as a limited production run yet, but given Missy Part 1 was, I bet it will be. I wish Big Finish would go back to how it used to be, where they didn’t limit their physical copies.
The only way they’d do that is if more people bought CD’s so really I don’t blame them for doing limited runs.
Like, I’m not a physical collector anymore for CD’s or DVD’s whereas I used to be, but realised I just wasn’t doing anything with them and it took up space, not to mention the cost. I respect to some its a very clean-cut physical or nothing thing though. That being said, I saw some people on twitter outraged when they announced some digital-only series ’ lately and said they won’t buy them out of spite but that’s not gonna help them figure out the demand for CD’s if they’re getting less sales
Honestly, it wouldn’t shock me if one day everything went digital-only. I wouldn’t be a fan of that, and I’m sure lots of fans would hate it, but I could realistically see it happening some day.
But then everything is cylindrical. Fans will download them, and save them on hard-drives or maybe even buy their own CDs (if they continue to exist) and burn them, like in ye olden days… and then physical media becomes more popular again, who knows!
Yeah I wouldn’t be shocked either. Instead of like, directing hate at them and refusing to buy digital only releases… its just gonna convince them further like.. Politely reply to their social medias saying there’s a demand, or email or something y’know! Ultimately they’re a small sales-driven business at the end of the day!
