What is your favourite Big Finish Boxset? I can’t decide between 3, Doom Coalition 3, Ravenous 3 or Missy Series One.
Id probably say Victory of the Doctor is the best box set I’ve listened too.
Same old response from me with Eleven & Valerie series. Specifically the last box set, Victory of the Doctor. It does need to 3 boxsets before it for context, but it is a great send off for Dudman’s Eleven.
I do have a soft spot for Missy Series 3.
The Eighth Doctor: Time War 1. I didn’t realize that until I went to filter all the audio dramas I rated 4.5 or 5. A lot of times I only love one or two of a box set. I guess I tend to like one-shot or loosely connected things more.
Tough choice… Off the top of my head, a few excellent ones are The Robots (I particularly liked 1 and 4), Gallifrey War Room 2 and Time War 2, Counter-Measures Series 2, and I think the third Graceless boxset was my favourite though I can’t quite remember
So many I could list. For now, favourites that spring immediately to mind are:
Third Doctor Adventures: Volume 5
The War Master: Series 1 - Only the Good
Eleven and Valarie: All of Time and Space(including, and especially Broken Hearts)
…oh, and…
Jago & Litefoot - I’m tempted to say all of them but I’ll highlight Series 2 as an early high point. Peak Victorian frights and delicious characterisation.
Not yet listened to The Robots. Keen to know more!
I’m meaning to listen to 11 and Valerie’s series but haven’t got to it yet.
Robots is wonderful, if you like Robots of Death and Liv Chenka I would urge you to check the Robots out - it’s set in a little gap in, I believe it’s Doom Coalition 2 but I could be wrong, but anyway Liv goes home to Kaldor and basically gets swept up in the robot revolution (of course). It’s a really well scripted set, and the story resolves very satisfyingly
Excellent! I must add this to my list of necessary acquisitions. Thanks for the recommendation.
Seconding Jago and Litefoot Season 2 That’s a really good one.
And all the folks saying Victory of the Doctor are just correct - it is fantastic through and through!
Others that are really good:
- Dark Eyes 3
- Gallifrey Time War 2
- Vienna Season 2
- Master! Season 1
- UNIT: Dominion
Oh yes! I remember (and also love) UNIT: Dominion. Genuinely did something different with the format. Some bold and exciting storytelling with properly ‘alien’ aliens (if you know what I mean). MacQueen also has a ball with this, as well as the ever reliable Tracey Childs as Klein. It deals with interesting sci fi concepts, big ideas and has some pretty stunning audio set pieces. Yes, this is a GREAT boxed set.
My favourite box sets Who wise are Peladon, 3rd Doctor adventures volume 7 and the second doctor companion chronicles volume 3.
Well the other story of this boxset is fairly average BUT it has my favourite story I’ve listened to this year which is The Pursuit of the Nightjar by Tim Foley from In the Night set! It’s such a magnificent story.
Any of the 11 and Valarie chronicles, as everyone said above. Also a huge fan of Stranded 4 and almost any War Master set. Favourite War Master is probably uuuh Only the Good or Master of Callous.
All three of my favorites are from the War Master range lol - The Master of Callous, Killing Time and Rogue Encounters. If I had to pick a couple boxsets from other ranges I’d probably settle on The Fifth Doctor Adventures volume 1 and The Diary of River Song series 3.
Ravenous 2 actually. I’ve only had the pleasure of listening to series 1 but what a goddamn series
I knew it was one of them
Adding onto the Peladon love. I was not expecting much from that but it is genuinely one of the best modern boxsets BF have come out with in recent years.
Looking back through the last couple years:
If we can count it as one boxset (and I believe it was intended to be) Sontarans vs Rutans is extremely fun.
Star Crossed is an absolute masterclass.
I don’t think Broken Memories from CDNM got as much love as it should have.
Both of the Seven/Harry/Naomi boxes are excellent
Friend of the Family is very firmly a jewel in BF’s crown
New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield: Blood and Steel is a heavy and brutal listen but is just spectacular
Fourth Doctor Adventures Series 11 doesn’t have a single miss in the 5 stories within.
Ninth Doctor Adventures Old Friends is wonderful
More to come when I have a computer that is easier to look at the BF website and I’m not flipping between tabs on my phone.
The first two War Master sets are so genuinely excellent in their own ways. Only the Good is more individual stories while The Master of Callous is such a dark, singular long story, both highlighting just how evil and skillful this particular incarnation is.
