AudioVisuals - The Genesis of BigFinish

Yeah, they were essentially only handing them out to a select few and were breaking pretty much every copyright law while doing it, so they don’t have release dates in the traditional sense.

These are now on the site! :tada:

Also this:

They might need a bit of cleaning up, and we still need to work out the cassettes and CDs for them!

You’ll probably want to go over the last paragraph on most of them.

Ugh didn’t notice that.

OK, done!

Great!

Incidentally, just for reference, “London is devestated by riots” in the description of Deja Vu is not a mistake. That’s how it was spelled on the cassette. :stuck_out_tongue:

They were young and inexperienced, so we can’t expect them to have been able to spell correctly at the time!

Anyways, yay! I really need to give these a listen at some point, but they’re probably quite low on my priority list.

Understandable. You do get Michael Wisher as the Daleks and Nicholas Briggs as the Doctor…

Yep. And when I read the synopses for the stories during my research, they did sound intriguing. And then I listened to a few snippets of one of the audios online, and the quality was pretty poor (and Nick Briggs sounded so young!), so it’s going to be a bit rough to get through these.

Not an excuse. Use a ■■■■■■■ dictionary!

They did at some point. They copied and pasted part of a dictionary directly into the description for one of the audios…

That would be Geopath.

I know I have heard the AudioVisuals, but we are talking 25 years.

I have them ready on my server, but they will have to take a backseat to BF. I’ll get to them before my 50th.

I bought the first two seasons (12 stories), but I currently only have acces to 5 that I transfered to digital format. I bought the later edition of The Space Wail and it has an introduction that states it was recorded in the summer of 1984.

I don’t believe that is true as I obtained the first 12 tapes here in the U.S. and I certainly was not one of any “select few,” nor did I know any of said “select few.” On the otherhand, I don’t recall how I even heard about the tapes or how I did obtain them.

Ahh, well, that’s what I gathered from the research I was doing when I helped with the spreadsheet for the site. But information on the AVs is pretty scarce on the internet, so it could be wrong.

So… I actually have something interesting to add to this thread which I forgot to mention initially, because there’s another major element of the AudioVisuals stories that made their way into BigFinish - albeit later than anything else.

The titular organisation from this episode: the Conglomerate.

Briggsy actually reworked them into pawns of the Black Guardian in the ‘Fourth Doctor Adventures’, with their representative being played by the late, great David Warner.

The Drudgers from ‘Conglomerate’ later appeared in Cuthbert and the Conglom’s final appearance, and are even pictured on the cover art

You don’t happen to have receipts with release dates do you?!

I was sorting through my server due to an upgrade and came across the folder with the Audio Visuals and Pisces. They have been loaded into iTunes and are ready to go. I think I’m going to start a bit backwards with Pisces so I can get accustomed to the tape source noise. They are quick listens.

Pisces 1 - Deja Vu

While I enjoyed this serial, it did leave me wanting more in terms of plot. While I know Anton, Pisces is a tertiary character in her own series. I get a feeling of the Seventh Doctor from her portrayal so far, which is good.

The sound design is good. Apart from the quality of the listening source, it strikes me as an almost Big Finish polish. Music, sound effects, ambient noises are all there, and the quality of the voice recording is good, considering that this is a fan work from the early 90s.

Issues with Pisces herself aside, I rather enjoyed this one and can’t wait to dive into more.
