Audio Club: The One Doctor

Finished Part 2. I am enjoying this and chuckling here and there. Our Scandinavian friends will be happy to know that Ikea survived into the far future, into what the Doctor calls “the vulgar end of time”. We also get an appearance from Matt Lucas (Series 10’s Nardole) in a completely unrecognizable role.

This isn’t terrible. I quite enjoyed the Infinite Shelves. That said, while it’s fun, I’m not seeing what other people see as hysterical comedy. For me, the comedic bits are just okay, nothing outstanding or special. On to Part 4.

Okay, finished this one. Yeah, it’s not bad, but not necessarily the comedy that a lot of people claim it to be. I was chuckling here and there, but more often cracking a smile. I don’t think I after ever laughed out loud (and there are other serious Big Finish stories where I have). It’s fine for what it is, a light Christmas panto with a fun gimmick. It’s not over played I don’t think. But it’s also not the best comedy ever written. I’d say about 3/5 for me.

I’ve just finished this one. It’s a mixed bag. I rather enjoyed the idea, and Sally is great. Some of the comedy was fine. Sadly, it just went on far too long. There were sections where I never even smiled, and after a while I just wanted the pain from not-landing comedy to stop.

This was just an audio version of Panto, and pantos aren’t my thing… at all.

I want more Sally. She was a great companion. All of her comedy landed with me.

I give this a 2.5/5.

To use a RedLetterMedia phrase. This serial was full of non-medy.

Non-medy meaning

Coined by RedLetterMedia.com on Episode 13 of Best of the Worst, Non-medy is the opposite of comedy, used to describe the phenomenon of being in a normal state until experiencing a bad joke, which elicits a frown and pushes the viewer into negative laughter.

“There are jokes that make you laugh, okay? And then there are jokes that you have no reaction to. But every now and then there’s a joke so bad, it makes you less laugh. Like, you’ll just be sitting there normal, and then the joke will happen, and then…(frowns)…slightly less smile, even though you weren’t smiling. And that is called Non-medy.” - Rich Evans, Best of the Worst

I don’t have a lot of time for a definition of something being a ‘non-medy’ because comedy and humour is so subjective that just because something doesn’t make one person laugh, doesn’t mean it won’t have the next person along roaring with laughter.

Yeah, ‘non-medy’ is a silly notion. A comedy is a comedy, and if you don’t find it funny, it’s simply not a comedy to your tastes. I don’t think there’s any comedy that could be called objectively unfunny.

It’s a bit like saying a horror film is a non-orror because someone doesn’t find it scary.

Some people take funny comments way too seriously. I think i’m gonna step back from giving opinions for a while.

@ItsR0b0tNinja - I am so sorry if I’ve upset you. I really directing the comments about ‘non-medy’ at the person who defined it, not you. And I know I’ve been batting back against a lot of your thoughts at the moment but please know it’s all in good faith and in no way meant to devalue your opinions.

Yes, as @deltaandthebannermen said, it’s nothing personal against you or your opinions. Just the ‘non-medy’ idea, which isn’t your idea. And nothing against that idea either, or anyone else who wants to use it to describe the opposite of a comedy. It’s pretty descriptive at least!

I just finished this one and thoroughly enjoyed it - yes it was a bit silly but Doctor Who needs a bit of silliness every now and then to avoid being too pretentious. And Colin Baker excels at this kind of thing. Plus I give an extra star for the question track at the end.

(Gradually catching up with the audio club, I need to pick up the pace a bit though!)
