I thought this was an enjoyable liitle romp, even if it is a little filler-y. Kinda makes me want to read the book. 8/10

This is a solid story, but is a step-down from Walking to Babylon.

Here is my original review from a year ago.

While not as good as Walking to Babylon, Birthright is another good instalment of Bernice Summerfield. The plot really sets you up in London and brings the world to life. While not being the quickest, and some added scenes to pad out the story, the plot is easy to follow and moves along at a decent pace. The acting is top-notch, and the audio work is the best it has been so far in Season 1.

Also, something I didn’t mention in the original review is that Colin Baker does a great job here. It’s always nice to hear actors stretch their acting muscles in different ways.

I want to say snooozzeee but that’s mean - it’s basically fine but nothing special

The Popov and Benny scenes are fun but the rest is kinda forgettable. ( I do also really like the book version)

Good fun but nothing special seems to be the general buzz for this one:

A fine enough Story with a few Highlights, but ultimately nothing more than that. Very interested to getting around to its Source Material sometime down the Road.

A step down from Walking to Babylon, but better than the first two stories. I haven’t read Birthright yet so I don’t know how this compares to it. This felt quite Doctor Who-y, though. And isn’t Colin Baker just marvellous? Loved him as Popb here. I didn’t even realise it was him at first; I had to double-check from the credits because he managed to sound so different.

7/10

Birthright is a solid, atmospheric entry in the Time Ring Trilogy, bolstered by strong performances, rich worldbuilding, and a thoughtful (if familiar) plot. Benny’s murder mystery half is the standout, thanks in part to a delightful turn from Colin Baker as Detective Mikhail Popov. Jason’s side of the story drags somewhat, and the Charrl plot repeats itself more than it should, but overall this is a straightforward and engaging audio drama. It captures the spirit of the New Adventures while adapting itself neatly into Big Finish’s early landscape, and it sets the stage nicely for the trilogy’s conclusion.
