I was reading about Robot 2K from the Dalek comics, thinking about how much it reminded me of old tokusatsu superheroes, and a fun little thought experiment occurred to me.
A new Doctor Who comic book miniseries is announced - a superhero team! Who should be on the roster?
Rules
- No OCs.
- No time lords.
- Original to the Whoniverse. No “Iron Man but from the land of fiction”, “Sherlock Holmes”, “Death’s Head”, “Scott Tracy” and suchlike. Tentatively considering an exception for original in-universe fictional characters; is there room for Langer’s “Silver Bullet” to be brought to life?
- Minimal televised contact with the Doctor. It’s a big universe out there. While the nature of the franchise means we inevitably have to choose from people who have probably met the Doctor, we should still rule out companions or major recurring villains - and certainly offshoots, metacrises, and bigenerations.
- The more diverse the origin, the better. Anything you can think of from BBV? Those weird Lethbridge-Stewart books? Even more obscure? Each member should feel distinct.
- Comic characters are a priority.
The Team, so far…
The Ghost
Debut: Doctor Who Revival, Christmas Special for 2016
Let’s get him out of the way. He’s our Superman, our Captain America - clearly the most “traditional” superhero we’re going to find.
Robot 2K
Debut: TV Century 21, #63 (1966)
The Human Torch, Vision, Kikaider, Kamen Rider… there’s a long tradition of robot super hero blokes, and it’s enormous fun to have one from such an early period in Doctor Who history.
Abslom Daak, Dalek Killer
Debut: Doctor Who Weekly, #17 (1980)
A comic-original character who kills daleks with chainsaws. Need I say more?
April MacLean, Shadow-kin
Debut: Class Episode 1 (2016)
Most people think her dead. Trapped in the body of a flaming, extra-terrestrial demon, April is hidden by her closest friends. But when a visitor asks her to join an elite group of extraordinary individuals…
The Gunslinger
Debut: Doctor Who, Series 7, Episode 3 (2012)
Every team needs a gravelly brooder like Batman or the Punisher. The Gunslinger protects the town called Mercy throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries… but what happens after the village is subsumed by encroaching cities?
Kara McGravy
Debut: Doctor Who Adventures, #20 (2007)
If the Avengers can have Black Widow and a guy with a bow and arrow, our team can manage an obvious Lara Croft pastiche.
Doom, Universe’s Greatest Assassin
Debut: Doom’s Day: Hour One (2023)
Look, I didn’t want her here either, but I’m a feminist first and foremost and frankly it was looking like a bit of a sausage fest.
So, who else would you include?
