Thank god I’m in Brasil because I definetely don’t have 500 libras to spend and that was so so so tempting…
Because I have no patience, I started Seeing I last night, and ended up writing down lots of stuff as I read it because it was very good and I had thoughts.
reactions (contains spoilers)
(@nyssaoftraken you lied to me! the text here was just as small as Adventuress of Henrietta Street /j /lh)
I love that the Doctor is still dressed how he was in the film, with the coat and cravat and whatnot, I always preferred it to the BF boxsets leather jacket.
Wind-up Daleks???
Down Among the Dead Men Again - BENNY REFERENCE
The Doctor’s prison shoes don’t fit him
Sam got a girlfriend (shame it wasn’t expanded on much)
Yay! Romana mentioned!
WHAT. THE DOCTOR’S BEEN IN THIS PRISON FOR 3 YEARS!?
Oh boy, it’s only my first EDA and Eight is already experiencing The Horrors. I bet this isn’t even the worst of it…
Awww he got his bear back (after he tried to gouge his own eye out and was kicked til his ribs cracked)
Oooh I like Sam. Breaking into building to steal information in order to bring down giant unethical corporations, hell yeah!
Noooo Sam’s poor cat
Ace mentioned!!!
‘this is my bear who shall remain nameless, or possibly not’ They both have nameless animal companions!
Not a fan of Sam wanting to kiss the Doctor all the time though
The Doctor looked everywhere for Sam he is so sweet I love him
He didn’t just flip a coin to decide, love that
NOT THE MIND PROBE
What is the thing about dark Sam? Is it from a previous book? I’m a little confused
Cosmic sneezing fit is the funniest way I’ve ever heard to describe the TARDIS noise!
This was the only book I’ve read for ages that drew me in enough to stay up past 1am reading, so kudos to Kate Orman and Jonathon Blum.
None of it was boring, the eye implant stuff was interesting, the aliens were cool, the doctor was a delight as always and I loved the world building.
Oops
The text in my copy is definitely bigger, but yeah, smaller compared to some of the others…
Yes <3 it really is no more than a couple of lines but still yayy!
It’s a reference to Alien Bodies that later gets followed up on/concluded in Unnatural History.
Glad you enjoyed it! The worldbuilding and character work are brilliant in Seeing I. And the Doctor absolutely goes through it…
Good to know! Those are some of the ones I’m planning to get next
Finished Unnatural History, really loved this one. So many great ideas, think I actual like Dark Sam more , the faction were great in this, and Griffin being commentary on those kind of fans who can’t have contradictions in their canon was really good too Think its my favorite Orman story so far
Happy to report that ‘The Taking of Planet 5’ slaps ever more than I remembered. For the people reading things out of order or skipping around, this one works best if you’ve got ‘Alien Bodies’ and ‘Interference’ under your belt. Lots of War in Heaven stuff, Time Lord stuff. The Doctor is covered in his own blood for a solid 70% of the book. Fitz is a star and Compassion is the human avatar for apathy. So far that’s making her interesting, but I’m not sure how long that’s gonna last. Whooped with joy when we got Homunculette back, and Marie’s little cameo at the end was great.
Thank you for this warning!
I really love Planet 5. It’s bizzare and high-concept in the best way. Loved everything to do with the way TARDISes were depicted!
Surprisingly I finished ‘The Scarlet Empress’ today, after having a rocky slow Start, I basically sat down and finished it fairly quickly. And well you can tell by my Speed, that I really enjoyed this one! It has its Flaws, but I can look past them. If I had to highlight anything, it’s the excellent Dialogue! So many wonderful Lines that I really liked (and if I wasn’t that lazy, I would have submitted quite a few of them by now). But yeah, I had a really fun Time! Then again, I already love Iris so that’s less surprising.
I think next up, I will try to read Vanderdeken’s Children. It’s the earliest book that I haven’t read but own and while I am a bit ‘jumping around’, I’d like to do as many early ones I can do! (And I prefer it to read the EDAs physically, outside the ones that don’t seem to get cheaper to buy, like Alien Bodies or The Bodysnatchers. On that Note: It’s very frustrating having only small gaps in those early books, oh well one Day I shall fill them, one day!)
The way anything any New Who writers did was already done first and better in the books SLASH I love the way that things like the Timeless Child add a new and unforseen layer of context to these things
I wouldn’t strictly call this a spoiler but I blurred it in case
What book is this?
Unnatural History p170 - it’s a banger so far!
Unnatural History man. Wow. What can I even say. I’m going to go for a walk to digest all that then I might be able to summon the words for a review. Basically, Blorman did it again. Wow.
I’m barely 20 pages into vampire science and it’s fantastic!!!
I don’t have high hopes for Carolyn though. She’s got all the signs…her whole life ahead of her, interesting, wants to travel with the doctor… I’m expecting her to die horribly
A fun fact about Carolyn that might make you revaluate what her role is supposed to be is that originally she was going to be Grace.
Yep and theres a draft of one of the scenes with Grace that they released in a charity anthology
I’ve heard that, and I like it less that what we got. It’s a better story with Carolyn as her own person, without any “Remember that thing? You know, from the movie?” and all the constraints that would come with that
I think that makes sense in 2025 when we have lots and lots and lots and lots of Eighth Doctor content, but the only other Eighth Doctor media releasing at the time were the comics. So it makes sense to explore something from the movie, specially wrapping that up and moving on to new grounds. The DWM comics did that too, actually.
I love Carolyn, and I prefer her to be her own character too. I just think from a writing point know that reveals a lot of what the intentions behind some of her drama were going for and find that interesting. I think the conflict between a life with the Doctor or the one she has built since would work wonderfully with Grace, I can see how the dichotomy Carolyn sees in his character as she grows older would work with Grace.
After a long break, I’ve finally decided to revisit the EDAs and was promptly reminded why I procrastinated returning.
Legacy of the Daleks is unfortunately a book written by John Peel and that alone should tell you my problems with it.
He has a not insignificant amount of talent as a writer that at least made it an easy read but apart from one or two characters, everything here probably counts as a cardinal sin
