Adventure is my name! - A Bernice Summerfield Thread

So I’ve finished the Eternity Club, such am enjoyable series. Much more lighthearted in tone, shorter episodes, fun characters but still some jeopardy. I think this was just what we needed after the Unbound Doctor stuff & the sad parting of the wonderful David Warner.

Finished Dead Man’s Switch again today - still not sure I understand Resurrecting the Past/Escaping the Future but Year Zero and Switch are both excellent. I feel like I’ve raced up to the boxsets, though I profess I think my relisten may slow down here because I didn’t entirely enjoy all the boxsets.

Ugh and I forgot the boxsets Benny theme suuuucks too haha - I just started Epoch

Epoch was my first encounter with Benny! I genuinely didn’t have a clue as to her connection with Doctor Who when I first listened to it, I just saw it was on sale for a ridiculously low price (I think £2.99 for the whole boxset?) and jumped right in. One of my first BF stories, too. I enjoyed it a lot, but haven’t ever relistened to it!

I fell in love with Benny instantly, of course

Of course :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: How was it as a first listen? Because it is quite strongly tied into the story that was building in the single releases before, but I also think it’s meant to be a jumping on point. £2.99 is a great price though!!

It worked quite well as a first listen. I had no idea what was meant to happen before the events of The Kraken’s Lament, but I think that added to the mysterious and bewildering atmosphere of the first story.

Completely dropping the setting and most of the characters at the end of episode 3, though, kind of threw me off, especially because (I think?) we don’t get any explanation for what’s going on and what the Epoch are in this boxset!

Also:

I haven’t reached this point yet in the audios or books (I’m doing them simultaneously), but I’ve been told the anthology Present Danger happens in between these two stories, which might give some context?

If it helps we barely get an explaination for what the Epoch are previous to that either. The hardest thing about the Benny audios are the way the books are interspersed with little to no explanation. But I do love them so <3

Finished The Christmas Collection tonight and there’s a lovely little ‘interview’ at the end where Lisa Bowerman interviews herself about playing Benny. It was recorded under the stairs during the second lockdown in 2020 and it’s just nice hearing her be so enthusiastic about still playing Benny after - at that point - 22 years.

Lisa’s interviews at the ends of all the audiobooks are a real highlight, she’s so funny

Have I Told You Lately? is a masterpiece. Such a superb character piece, tense, experimental and emotional. It’s a less effective Scherzo with an engaging narrative and so good performances.

Positives
  1. Gripping Mystery: The story hooks the audience with its dark, atmospheric premise and unfolding suspense.

  2. Strong Character Dynamics: The interplay between Benny and the Unbound Doctor, enriched by their reflections and vulnerabilities, adds emotional depth.

  3. Innovative Writing: The monologues woven into a simulated conversation create a unique and engaging narrative structure.

  4. Rich Sci-Fi Lore: The setting aboard the Ark of Whispers, with references to the Time Lord Victorious event, enhances the story’s depth and stakes.

  5. Immersive Sound Design: The minimalist approach, with echoing voids and static interference, heightens the tension and isolation.

  6. Outstanding Performances: Lisa Bowerman, David Warner, and newcomer Misha Butler deliver compelling and nuanced portrayals.

  7. Poignant Climax: The bittersweet resolution, with the Speaker achieving sentience only to relinquish it, leaves a lasting emotional impact.

Ohhhhh I remember why I was stalling on listening to the boring boxsets. It’s because they’re boringgggg… some of the stories are decent in there but I’m on the Legion set and it’s going slowly. Maybe I should just join Shauny and jump back to the start

I wanna play with youuuuuuuuuuuu~

@ivqks159 I don’t know why I rated Everyone Loves Irving as 4* before - I don’t think I hate it as much as you but I did not enjoy it 4* worth. I think I must have got so excited to not be on a boring one, but I totally see what you’re saying about it being tonally all weird. It’s like it’s trying to be funny and bent all the characters slightly out of shape to make them first

I do enjoy the background adventure is my name play though, I don’t care what anyone says I think that song is FUN

Yeah I’m such a big hater of that episode I’m sorry :sob::sob: I don’t get how could miles Richardson mess up that badly with benny and brax’s characters like in what story that mikes had played as brax before was he a misogynist :sob::sob::sob::sob::sob::sob: I also do like the adventure is my name song though!
