David Warner is just wonderful, and I am so attached to his incarnation of The Doctor! I have been tempted to relisten to all of his audios, but I am trying really hard to use some self control and get caught up with other stories before I start relistening to any. I will never get through them all if I allow myself to do that otherwise!
I am going to begin listening to some of the Bernice stories I missed today while working because now I can’t stop thinking about it!
Really enjoying The Eternity Club. 2nd volume continues the fun tone with a little bit of mystery. The short 30 minute stories are a refreshing change from some of the longer epic releases.
Please Retain Your Ticket for the Cloakroom has a Douglas Adams feel about it’s central idea.
So, I started listening to The Unbound Universe this week.
THE LIBRARY IN THE BODY, or CREEPY SINGING MONKS!
It’s an okay start. Bowerman and Warner are great and this one has some interesting ideas, but the overall story left me a bit cold. Maybe my head wasn’t fully in the game. The Master tease is a fun one though.
I finished The Unbound Universe this week. It’s a strong set overall. I love Bowerman and Warner in the lead, and Sam Kisgart in the last one is delightful. The best part about these is the mix of humour and darker stuff and the riff on Cybermen in Planet X (“the planetary equivalent of cabbage”) as well as the department store analogy in The Emporium at the End. Slightly disappointing ending to the set, but I suspect there’s more to come in the next one.
Planet X = 8/10 The Very Dark Thing = 7/10 The Emporium at the End = 8/10
Started listening to Volume 5 of the New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield today, with this great opener, The City and the Clock.
The back and forth between Benny and the Doctor is the highlight of these stories so far, especially how Benny notices how different Unbound is from her usual Doctor.
I’m telling you, he’s the new River to me <3 It’s honestly been so long since I listened to that boxset that I can’t tell you what happens at all, but I’m pretty sure I had fun and not just because Narv was in it
Asking For a Friend is next up in the set. It’s Unbound doing therapy and Benny being frustrated. Very character-centric, quite slow and not entirely to my taste. But certainly makes you understand and appreciate the characters more.
I’m only 19 minutes into The Greatest Shop in the Galaxy and have laughed a lot already. Benny contemplating if 12 months in jail is worth it for stealing a few hundred pairs of shoes got me genuinely chuckling.
The Greatest Shop in the Galaxy was great. The first 1/3 was very funny, and then when the plot started I was very engaged right through to the end.
I think the weakest was The Green-Eyed Monsters. I didn’t really connect with it, but it was rather short.
It was surprising to see that The Dance of the Dead has such a low score. I rather enjoyed it. It was nice to hear Ice Warriors in an almost normal type situation.
The Mirror Effect seems like it sets up future stuff, but the actual episode was kind of a mess. I still enjoyed the twisting nature of the tale, but it was certainly a bit ‘meh’.
EDIT: I also got my first Benny Badge with the completion of The Dance of the Dead.
I also quite like that one, I think as always themes of memory and possession are interesting to me. However the Ice Warrior voice effects in early Benny can be a little bit unbearable which I don’t think helps
I just listened to the last Eternity Club box. Good! Very enjoyable, and satisfying enough. I like all the chararacters in this set a lot, and I wasn’t confused which is a win. I do want more though… What is the orb?? what is the message??? ngl they said silver ball and I went Joseph!?! but looks like no
It’s actually so sad that the Eternity Club is over– I want more of this series, it’s just so so fun. These last two stories were possibly my least favourite bc they’re more action-y and plot-y, but it’s so lovely spending time with these characters and I LOVE LOVE that humanoid TARDISes are back!!!
Agree, I think the last boxset was strong but I love a silly adventure more than plot in general. All the characters were fab and it did sound like they were setting us up for more so
