15th Doctor opinions (and Doctor rankings)

I probably put that wrong.

I know 12 loves the show.

But he says he has no intention of ever doing it again. He’s moving on. I don’t get that.

Maybe I’m being bitter because we didn’t get any multi Doctor stories during the 60th and it’s probably because none of them were interested.

I don’t ask for much, I just want 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 all to meet and save the world from an invasion of the Chumblies or something.

Shall we put a GoFundMe up to pay Dudman for a fan project?

I have notes here

  • We were robbed by not having a proper multi-Doctor story in the 60th
  • What’s with the Classic Who erasure
  • None of them were interested? I cannot believe that of Davison, C. Baker and McCoy
  • Love the Chumblies :green_heart:

Put Paul McGann on the television screen pleaaasseeeeeeee, I need it… And you know of it happened I would absolutely lose my mind :exploding_head:

It’s so interesting seeing people’s rankings of Doctors. Personally, I think they’re all wonderful - I don’t think a single Doctor has ever been ‘bad’. They’re just different. For myself, I mostly rank 10 so low because I’m sick to death of wider fandom treating him like he’s the only good thing to ever happen to DW which is categorically untrue. But I do love him and I think DT brings such a captivating energy to the role.

On the other hand, people who dislike 11, I will never understand. Matt Smith’s ability to have such an ancient soul is mindblowing, and I for one like the way he seems silly - it’s like 7, he’s silly until you realie there’s something dark under the surface.

Just not sure it would look right as they are all older. Maybe if they were Bigenerated versions? Or reuse the holograms from Power?

But then you also need to recast or explain the missing Second, Third, maybe Fourth Doctor.

No hate, just want it authentic.

I know what you mean but this is exactly what I was saying when I said it’s popular to hate on Ten just because he’s popular…

Come on. Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey is practically the catch phrase of this show  And no explanation was needed in The Two Doctors for why 2 looked so much older

(My love for the Classic era might be shining through a bit here :sunglasses:)

This has gone pretty off topic lol

But yes when I am show runner I will commission The Fifteen Doctors (including Fugitive, why not), which leads to a spin-off series with the Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller

11 is fairly low on my rankings (though keep in mind that when I do this tierlist it goes from S tier to A-, so nobody is disliked) and I think that’s coming from a mix of his era being my least favorite of NuWho in some broad writing ways, and the fact that I feel like they don’t often enough lean into where I think Matt Smith is at his absolute best, which is the really soft tender moments, while the big speeches and attempts at making him seem intimidating just don’t tend to land for me.

I’ve changed the topic title so we are no longer off topic :joy:

Unimaginable power. Unlimited rice pudding!

I think his biggest strength is portraying an old person in a young body, and all the anger/frustration that comes from it. I think it is something that is missing from 13 onwards.

Ten is my favorite Doctor by far. With his time with Donna being the highlight of his run.

I always thought of Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, having a wider range in his acting. I mean, I was able to see all the centuries he lived through in his eyes and mannerisms. But for whatever reasons, it never really clicked. Maybe it had something to do with the stories he got, or how the 11th Doctor was (over) idolized by the other characters. I don’t know. I just know there is a definitive disconnect between my perception of his superb acting chops and him not being my favorite Doctor.

The second place for me actually holds the 12th Doctor. And I absolutely did not like his first season. I only really liked his last season.

As for Ncuti Gatwa’s interpretation of the Doctor - I am one of the people who see many nuances in his acting (summarized as ‘crying’ by some  ). I also really appreciate his interpretation of the Doctor. I could envision a future where he is on the same tier as the 12th Doctor for me. However, there aren’t enough stories with him yet to definitively say one way or another.

See, I feel the “old man in a young body” thing in the softer moments, but not so much in the angry ones

Even though I rank 11 for example rather low, that is in comparison with the other doctors so really it’s a very high ranking, the competition is just insanely strong and the differences in my ranking are extremely small and subject to change. I just really love every doctor.

I think there are plenty of nuances in his acting, including the scenes when he is crying :slightly_smiling_face:

Just curious, how would you otherwise talk about the scenes where he has tears streaming down his face if you don’t use the word crying?

Weeping

In all seriousness, while I have ten or more ways to express something in words in my mother tongue, I feel quite limited when it comes to English as my second language. I’ve noticed that directly translating words for emotions using a dictionary often doesn’t quite capture the same nuances.

But that makes for an - at least for me  - interesting exercise. In case you’re curious, I can share some of the various ways I would describe his way of emoting by looking at 15th Doctor opinions (and Doctor rankings) - #97 by flora_snow00

  • First picture: verzweifelt weinen / plärren

During this little exercise, I’ve realized that I come from one of the corners of the world where men aren’t really expected to express emotions through words. So much for me expressing things in my mother tongue in 10 or more way’s.

The translation of the German words above via app is:

  • First picture: desperately crying / whining
  • Second picture: Slightly melancholic but also calm facial expression with a glimmer of hope in the eyes and the trace of a lonely tear making its way down the left cheek.
  • A facial expression mourning something lost with an undertone of deep-seated pain (and again) and the trace of a lonely tear making its way down the right cheek

For me, I guess, there is nearly always more involved than just tears when Ncuti sheds tears. His facial expression is just so rich.

One season complete for the Fifteenth Doctor and I definitely have a clearer sense of where this Doctor ranks among the others, but I haven’t sat down and really figured it out yet in terms of exact rank. I do know he ranks well compared to some of the others, but isn’t necessarily the best ever, either.

It feels like he is a strong candidate for a performer with more potential than the writing has given him so far, but even then he’s really gotten to shine in pretty much every episode except for 73 Yards (for obvious reasons).

I know what you mean, sometimes I can’t hit quite the right nuance of my meaning in English compared to Danish.

And when I use crying to describe Ncuti’s scenes it is only as a means to describe what is going on and not as a negative.

I am quite pleased that I understood most of what you wrote in German, it is not often I use it. (Was taught it in school from ~13 years old to 18, but haven’t really used it much since). German is a fabulously descriptive language really :slightly_smiling_face:. I guess I just don’t quite see these “weepings” as really getting the emotional response across to me, but I also think that relates to what kind of acting that appeals to me as a viewer.

Because if the script calls for a scream, a scream he has to do. Unless it was Ncuti’s choice to add those in, I’m going to figure it was the script writer (and director) who told him to scream in the way that he does.
